The HySafe Experience: A Transportation Case Study

Here at HySafe we have more than 100 years of experience in fall protection, we utilize these skills to provide safe work environments for all those who need it. We have created a four-step process that we dubbed the “HySafe Experience”. The process goes as follows: assessment, design, installation and finally re-certification. It is this experience that allows us to provide the client with great customer service and quality systems. Let’s take a look at a job that we have recently completed.

Assessment:

As previously stated, we begin our process with an assessment. For this specific job they required fall protection in a locomotive shop. After corresponding with representatives, we scheduled a site visit. We need to see firsthand all the potential fall hazards that a site may contain. We must also obtain exact measurements of all the problem areas to send off to our team to create solutions. Upon assessing the site, the specialists determined that the client had two problem areas. The first problem area was at the entrance of the facility for the rail cars. The second was at the location where maintenance personnel would have to be on top of the rail cars to repair any damages and complete their own assessments of the cars. The proposed solution for both areas were two overhead jib arms also known as swing arms. The reason we chose to implement this system is because the swing arms would travel the length of the shop and allow the employees to work on top of the trains with continuous movement.

Design:

A swing arm is a custom solution for any overhead crane bays or loading areas. As we know, an overhead crane was already installed in the shop so this was the ideal solution for the fixed system that would not impede normal operations. We sent all the specs that were obtained at the onsite visit over to our in-house CAD designers. Having an in-house team at HySafe allows us to avoid going through any middlemen and receive designs in a timely fashion to begin the creation of the engineered system.

Installation:

Ensuing the approval of the engineered system, we sent out in-house trained professionals known as our field team to install the solution at the site. Precision in engineering fabrication prior to installation enables our crew to expertly fit each piece into place quickly and efficiently. This assures a completed project that delivers 100 percent of its intended performance on time.

Re-certification:

All our HySafe systems are OSHA and ANSI compliant. However, based on OSHA’s current standards “1910.179(j)(1)(ii) Inspection procedure for cranes in regular service is divided into two general classifications based upon the intervals at which inspection should be performed. The intervals in turn are dependent upon the nature of the critical components of the crane and the degree of their exposure to wear, deterioration, or malfunction. The two general classifications are herein designated as “frequent” and “periodic” with respective intervals between inspections as defined below:” Due to these requirements after each installation we like to reach out to all our clients to keep you on schedule with being OSHA compliant. These re-certification visits are done annually however if you are in California it is required to be re-certified twice in a year. For the appointment the team goes back on site and checks for new hazards, we also check the existing system to ensure its compliant and safe. The client is provided with a certification for their records proving the system is up to OSHA standards. This allows for all our clients to avoid any trouble with OSHA or ANSI.
